The Abstract

Woman of Science
03:06
|
|||
Progressing pro rata, delving deep in the data
For justification, for tangible truth
Just then an apprentice, resentful, relentless,
Unleashes defences, pro-pro-creative pursuits
She counters ‘listen here, sister, I don’t mean to dismiss, yer
Dilemma is real, and I feel how you’re torn
But you need to take a decision, when we make a division
A fragment is lost or diluted in form’
Shunned by false allies, she keeps her eyes on the prize
Modus ponendo ponens
Keeps a radar for lies, aligns her chimes with the wise
Stands for freedom to affront and defend
Now eudemonia ain’t no wade in the sea,
Tears for unborn ideas in the starkest of nights
But upheavals of thought were never easily wrought
And she’s down in the ditches ‘til the spark of the light
And when the harvest is gathered, she harbours no anger
But wrangles with ardour for those who deserve
And in the season of laurels, she swallows no favour
Her verdict her nobler instincts to serve
Met by foul cries, she calls to particularise
Modus ponendo ponens
Shunned by false allies, she keeps her eyes on the prize
Stands for freedom to affront and defend

The Hard Problems
04:15
|
|||
Looking upward toward the precipice
I feel a real resurgence
The thrill of light through interstice
As theory’s bright emergence
But now the grip of compromise
Oh Lord it keeps you countin
Cleaves this refuge from the daily ties
Calls you down from the mountain
All across these western plains
I’ll go weaving as a river
In my mind, beyond the bounds of Time
And granite questions to consider
And in this ebb and flow
Is formed the pattern of a lifetime
The steep descent from glorious views
Offset by having seen them
My learned friend, it’s hardly news
There are but degrees of freedom
All across these western plains
I’ll go weaving as a river
In my mind beyond the bounds of Time
And concrete answers to deliver
And in this to and fro
Are formed the patterns of a lifetime

And so we’ll go once more a-roaming
Neath the wizened western sky
And reopen permutations
Of our whereabouts and why
As when they put forth elder’s razors
And on familiar turf we trod
And we rejected pressured wagers
It’s not a choice of wine or God
The defences of pretension
The vicissitudes at stake
A renunciation of extension of ambition
For blind ambition’s sake
A plea as well to obligation
And virtue’s moral coil
Of allegiance not to abstraction but to a station
Of connection to the toil

An Art to Master
04:09
|
|||
Starting strongly, she sensed it quickly, condensed her worth
Saw it clearly, bore the burden of a golden berth
The tired story of stifled glory rang false and shrill
To state it truly, she faced in duly, with force and will
And so unladen, refuted havens, chose to persist
Rejected scheming, painted her dreamings of smoke and mist
And through the seasons, watched the drifting with a wary eye
Who gave as reason to cut all moorings the weary lie
And when each deal was played
To breach her secret trade
She declined
Burned by the lowly, she rose repeatedly above
Spurned by the holy, spoke agreeably of love
Forgave quickly, forbade slowly, held her course
Yet met a duty to the wretched and the cursed
And when each deal was played
To breach her secret trade
She declined

The Magnetic Moment
04:21
|
|||
There is not even an all-embracing universal
Now
Just an illusion, far beyond the limits of what we perceive
And obsessive thoughts of then,
and what was when
and why or how
Invoke confusion, misplaced longing, we’re self-deceived
Step outside of Time
In autotelic surge
The still point of the turning world
Eternity in flow
Untied from need to know
The tapestry unfurled
And joy free to emerge
When you step outside of Time
A largeness of contemplation reveals
We are not bound
The magnetic moment reveals
We are not bound
Step outside of Time

A Stylish Epitaph
04:09
|
|||
Empty parchment tells a tale
Of untold glories
A hundred verses veiled
A thousand stories
Your unpenned villanelle
Like unheard thunder
The space you left was vast and tragic
On trails you blessed and laced with magic
You faced regret with guile and craft
Dealt death a stylish epitaph
Echoes of an epigram
In the dim-lit corridor
Kindling for a dithyramb
Pinned to the corkboard
Your unsung sestina
A transcendental number
Now the peaks all drained of colour
On trails you reached when life was fuller
Your ghost calls ‘remember true for me
Forgetting’s jewelled eulogy’
The space you left was vast and tragic
The paths you blessed still laced with magic
You faced regret with guile and craft
Dealt death a stylish epitaph

Interloper
05:39
|
|||
Back at the first lessons
Where the hunters were crowned
He feigned acquiescence
Then ran with the hare
Then ran with the sound
He stifled susceptance
And countered the costs
For want of acceptance
A burden is lost
A sweet unbelonging
Later encumbered
In the claws of success
They thought they’d figured his number
But he slipped through the air
Evaded the nets
He hampered transmittance
Through the fields that he crossed
For want of admittance
A burden is lost
A sweet unbelonging

Diaries of Disaster
06:25
|
|||
I.
I’ll recitate now if you please
A tale befits Euripides
‘Tween Hagibis and Ulysses
A memoir of debacle
Escaping from September's whip with
Homeric zeal we gave the slip
To winter’s noose, embarked the ship
Unleashed from burden's shackles
‘Side old volcanic towering lake
At wedding feast, we laid our stake
Our hearts, at peace, released the break
No turmoil left to tackle
Little did we know or sense
That deep beneath the fissure vents
The magma roused, the message sent
By Anubis the jackal
And with the night thus married on
On to San Juan we carried on
Taal’s unknown raging ravaged on
It's furnace yet to crackle
II.
Sailing back towards mean of time
On waves of hope, we learned of signs
Of waves of fear, of death knells' chimes
Of proxy decimation
On winter's barren coast we docked
Abandon’s promise on the rocks
And forecasts of the seal unlocked
As per Book of Revelation
Astride, an old plague’s novel strain
Took hold with force of Charlemagne
A triumph of bad faith o’er Reason’s reign
And Freedom’s abnegation
Seeking refuge from archaic disease
I turned to old world treatise
In John the Scott, Averroes
Resistance to ablation
But liberty, I learned too late
Unshielded, will capitulate
To a new fearful middle age, a state
Of premature negation
III.
How weak our fortress proved to be
Its chosen guard reduced to knee
Its granite walls assuredly
Gave way like alabaster
Still seeking sources of rescue
I moved through Mill and Montesquieu
The arc of progress oft gets skewed
Before the point of master
Midst chronicles of thought and time
And annals of ecstatic rhyme
Lie journals of the captive mind
And diaries of disaster
Now grounded in our grim enclave
As demigods dictate the waves
And swathes content in Safety's cave
Deny what's to follow after
Still, I turn back to the sages
Wisdom in their yellowed pages
Reason rising through the ages-
Dream of, at last, its laughter

Ten Septembers
04:49
|
|||
Ten Septembers since we’ve spoken
No break in silence even dreamed
Your gift of guidance unopen to us now
In reach forever once, it seemed
I’ve sought liberty from cliché
And sentimental legacies
Faced the death pledge, fought arguments of Luck
Unearthed meaning by degrees
Still the shadows of your sacrifices linger
Their strength and principled control
As I feel the weight of those that I refuse to make,
I hope the peace you hold is whole
